Josh,

Just like you mention that your bikes suspension has you all over the place that is the key..

The better your suspension is to being perfect the less a steering damper is being useful.

Some model bikes even if set up properly need one as Jim mentioned to stop a problem of a bikes handling, a 2001 Honda CR 250 was one.

If you ever get a handle dar ripped out of your hands or hit the ground so fast you don't know what happened..you most likely would still be riding instead of picking you and yourself off the ground if you had the damper on..

What year and model bike are you riding ???

I tried a steering damper a few years back and never came to terms with it. The damper was good for WFO sections but wore me out when going lock-to-lock through the woods. I don't ride rocks much, but in the roots a good suspension setup tended to reduce the deflection problem that I was attempting to correct with the steering damper.

I keep the steering head bearings adjusted so a slight drag is felt in the handlebars and check static and race sag periodically. The sag setting is not a set and forget setting. The springs will relax over time. This is especially critical with a new bike/spring set.

I've also gotten into a habit of resetting the alignment of the front wheel/axle/forks just about every ride, mostly because I crash alot and have noticed the forks become harsh if I don't realign everthing periodically.
