Motor
The stock motor is anemic and low on power, accordingly the first upgrades were made to the motor. The cylinder has been overbored 1mm and piston upgraded to a JE 10.5:1 high compression piston and stage 1 Hot Cam brand camshaft. I selected this piston and cam combination specifically as it provides the most additional power while still retaining the ability to use pump gas. The head was sent to XRs Only in California for porting, new valves, valve seals, and 3 angle grind. With the increase in compression, I wanted to address the issue of increased heat, so I added a Jegg aftermarket oil cooler. The oil cooler is attached to the frame with a custom mount designed to protect the oil cooler from debris. Bike also includes an oil dipstick thermometer to monitor oil temperature. With the addition of the oil cooler, oil temps reach 250 and are well within range for the motor. Stock exhaust was replaced with a full FMF system: powerbomb header and Q4 canister. The clutch pack was upgraded to EBC heavy duty clutch plates and springs. The transmission shifts smoothly throughout the gear. In the spirit of full disclosure, the shift shaft is tweaked a bit rearward which you can see in the picture. Note the splines on the shaft are intact, the oil seal is intact and without weeping. This presents no issue to shifting or operating the bike.
Fuel System/Delivery
The stock cv carb was replaced with a 40mm FCR-MX carb from a 2004 Honda CRF450r. The carb has been rebuild with fresh seals and hoses and jetted to match the xr motor. This carb also includes flex jet fuel screw, and merge adjustable leak jet. Both these items allow for further carb tuning with the carb attached to the bike. The carb also includes the NOS airbox adapter, ensuring low air turbulence from the airbox into the carb. The low volume and heavy gas tank was replaced with an Acerbis 5.8 gallon tank.
Suspension
The stock forks are compression adjust only and overly flexible. I replaced the stock forks with 2006 CRF250R USD forks. The forks have been rebuilt with fresh seals, bushings, fluid, and new.49 weight springs. The shock was sent to Factory Connection in NH last winter for a complete rebuild, revalve, and respringing. The difference in ride quality and handling is amazing.
Electrical/Lighting
I replaced the stock headlamp with the Trailtech X2 HID light. This light was recently rebuilt with the most current lamps and ballasts. Stock battery has been upgraded to Odyssey deep cycle. At 3 times the price of a normal battery, you never have to worry about being stuck in the woods without power. Stock speedometer was replaced with a Trailtech Vapor computer and dashboard. The clunky stock turn signals were replaced with sleek LED models.
Wheels/Drive Train
The front hub is the matching CRF250R hub laced with Buchanan heavy duty spokes to Gold Excel Takasago Rim. I added an EBC big rotor kit and Galfer stainless steel brake line to ensure excellent brake modulation. The rear hub is stock xr650l aced with Buchanan heavy duty spokes to matching Gold Excel Takasago Rim. The rear hub received new bearings/seals with the wheel rebuilding. The front tire is Pirelli XCMH and the rear is the new Interco US made Terraflex with 95% treadlife remaining. Both tires were chosen specifically for their do anything/go anywhere tread design. The Terraflex is a true run flat tire that can be ridden comfortably with 5 PSI allowing for larger imprint and greater traction. The rear includes an extra heavy duty Michelin 4mm thick tube. Both wheels include rim locks. Chain is RK X ring chain.
Cockpit
Stock handlebar was replaced with gold TAG metals CR high bend and trimmed down to 30.5 inches wide. I added Highway Dirt Bikes handguards with integrated top clamp and added a foldaway mirror for street riding. I had Paul at Highway Dirt Bikes custom fabricate the mount for the Trailtech computer and dashboard. Not only do the handguards look trick, but the design also helps to support the bar.
Appearance
The stock XR650l just looks like an old design. I added Cyrca CRF front and rear plastics and shaved down the stock side panels to update the look. I also added a DRZ undertail rear brake light to rid the bike of the "TV" style rear brake light. The seat was recovered with black gripper cover. I added a man rack "six pack rack" which is the minimalist of the racks available for this bike. The result is a more modern looking trail bike.
