My First Hare Scrambles
by Tim - Doony79@aol.com

On Nov. 17 I attended my first Hare Scramble, at Lembo Lakes. I just began ridding a dirt bike last October, a KDX 200. With the help of some seasoned riders they quickly had me signing up for my first enduro the ridge run. They hadn't seen me ride yet and if they had would had probably changed their minds. I'm glad they didn't though because I went out and rode the the first 45 of 60 miles, and I was hooked. Oh yeah I hadn't seen a rock riding in the pines of NJ yet either. Well after that I just kept ridding and racing Rattlesnake finished, Speedsville DNF, Beehive finished, Scrub Pine finished, Michuax DNF flat tire, and PBER finished. Well I had great first year on my dirt bike. I was not very competitive anywhere from 5th to 10th place C-200. The lembo lakes hare scramble ended my first season and now I am not only looking foward to 00' enduros but hare scrambles also. Before the start of the race I was a little nervous and had a lot of questions. Did you have to sign up early, was I going to be to slow and in the way, who keeps track of the laps, was the start going to be a pile up in the first corner?

Well we got to the race and went right to were the the sign up was. No problem finding that. You didn't need much a valid ama card an 30 bucks. Then we got dressed and just kind of watched what everyone else was doing to see how early to get the bikes warmed up and how early to go to the start, our race started at eleven. We got to the start in plenty of time. 10-15 minutes is plenty. I caught on quick that they had flyers on posts that had the class and the line number you were on. I was on line 3. I counted back three lines and just found an open spot. The start was a little intimidating 20 to 30 guys on a line. The first line was off with the green flag.

Approximately 20 seconds later with the next green flag line 2 was off. Next was my line. It was a dead start. Some vertically challenged had crates to use to stand on. Not knowing what it was going to be like I held back and dropped into the middle of the pack on the start. A single file line formed quickly, with not to much passing we hit a very small motocross section with very small and smooth jumps. Then it was into "the jungle" as they called it. With still no room to pass I just held my position. Then quickly came up on a hold up a rock wall crossings which was easily crossable without riders down in front of you. So it was a little nuts trying to get through but not bad. After about 3 miles of rocky woods you came out to an old apple orchard. This part was fast and fun. Their was plenty of room to pass and open it up. Their was a few water holes and mud crossings but nothing unpassable. After 3 miles of the orchards I was ready to hit the woods again. This time I knew what I was in for and went a little harder, not like the next section in an enduro. There was no back ups anywhere and they had plenty of guys in the woods directing you through the mud crossings. When I came through on my third lap my hour and a half was up. I had only been lapped by a few riders with no problems.

I was done, a little wet but had finished. The course was marked very well and there were many spectators throughout the course cheering you on. The results were also done very quickly. You didn't have to wait until the next race was done see how you did. I guess I did all right I finished 14 out of 24 in C-200.

I would recommend trying a hare scramble to anyone who rides enduros or just likes ridding trails. It was a blast and can't wait till next year.
